This Running Shadow
Composition and color
The image is dominated by two large masses. A pale blue-gray, almost chalky, sweeps across the left and center, with a darker slate-gray band arcing across the top. Against these sits a deep, inky navy-black that runs down the right side and pools along the bottom. The contrast between the cool, light forms and the dark ones gives the piece a push-pull tension, like figure against shadow.
Hot accents break up the cool palette: fluorescent pink along the top-left corner, the bottom edge, and a bold patch at right, plus saturated reds clustered at lower left and center. Small touches of mustard yellow and ochre appear near the center, at the right, and at lower right, and a pale peach block sits in the bottom-right corner.
Texture and technique
The surface looks thick and tactile. The grays are laid on with a palette knife or stiff brush, leaving ridges, drags, and scraped edges. The black areas are glossier and have a wet, rippled look. Several edges are traced with a speckled, charcoal-like or spattered line, particularly around the white shapes at center and lower left, which makes them look cut out or outlined. There are signs of mixed media and layering: a spray-painted halftone dot-grid pattern in yellow-green at the top center, fine spray-like speckling around the yellow dots in the middle, and scraped-back patches that reveal red and pink underneath.
Details and mood
A few small marks give the eye places to land: a tiny “x” in the ochre patch at right, a pair of yellow dots against dark at center, and a small white triangle at lower left that looks like a highlight.
Overall the painting feels energetic and slightly ominous, with soft, cloudlike forms pressed against a dark ground and flashes of neon and red cutting through. It reads as abstract expressionist in spirit, with the contemporary punch of fluorescent color.
