Seas Will Rise
12x12" Mixed Media on Cradled Wood Panel

Seas Will Rise
This is an abstract, mixed-media piece on a square panel, built from thick, layered paint with a heavily textured surface.
Composition: The painting divides roughly into two zones. The upper two-thirds is a broad field of pale gray-blue, applied in thick, scraped, almost plaster-like layers that suggest an overcast sky or a wall of fog. Below it, a band of saturated cobalt and ultramarine blue reads as deep water, with a lighter sky-blue block at the lower right. The pale upper mass presses down on the water, and the horizon between them is irregular, with the gray pushing into the blue in soft, cloud-like lobes.
Forms and color accents: Dark navy-black shapes break up the calm. A large dark mass at the left edge, flecked with peach and pink, could be read as an animal or a rocky outcrop. At the center is a rounded, helmet- or boulder-like form with ochre, mustard, and olive-green planes outlined in thick black, which becomes the focal point. A strip of hot coral-pink sits just right of center, and small isolated marks of coral, peach, and lavender appear like buoys or flotsam. At the top, a dark diagonal streak with teal, pink, and lime edges cuts down into the sky, and a peach dot on blue sits in the upper left, almost like a small sun or moon.
Line and texture: A loose black scribbled loop rises at the right, adding a calligraphic, graffiti-like gesture. A delicate dotted white arc curves through the lower blue, and a ruled, stitched-looking dark border runs along the bottom edge. The surface shows scraping, scumbling, and visible cracking, with some paint worn back to reveal underlayers. The artist’s signature appears at the lower right.
Mood and interpretation: The palette of cool blues set against bursts of neon coral and earthy ochre feels both playful and uneasy. The weight of the gray mass over the water, the submerged-looking central form, and the title suggest themes of rising water, climate anxiety, or nature’s encroachment, though the loose, childlike marks keep the tone from becoming grim. It has the feel of contemporary abstract expressionism mixed with a bit of street-art spontaneity.
