La Fontaine Noire
Composition
A large, irregular field of creamy off-white paint dominates the canvas. It was applied with a palette knife or stiff brush, leaving ridges, drag marks, and a plaster-like surface. This mass leaves a ragged colorful border along the edges and opens up in a few spots, like windows cut into the surface.
The black focal point
At the bottom center, a glossy black gesture rises from a dark pool. Thin, looping, poured or dripped lines shoot upward like stems, antennae, or a fountain’s spray. This is the clearest link to the title. The wet-looking black contrasts with the matte, chalky cream.
Color and detail
Border and edges: Strips of saturated color in red, black, turquoise, lime green, and navy line the top and sides. They look like collaged or printed fragments, with a striped, almost barcode-like rhythm in the upper right.
Bottom zone: The area below the cream layer is the most vivid. It holds lime and olive greens in a dotted or checkered pattern, bright cyan, and touches of orange, yellow, and purple.
Red accents: A flame-like red patch sits left of center, with smaller red bursts on the right and in the corners, balancing the composition.
Black accents: Round black blobs on the left and near the center, and blocky black bars on the right, echo the central fountain shape and tie the piece together.
Texture and technique
The surface contrasts smooth glossy drips with heavy impasto, scraped and scratched areas, and a fine grid-like texture left of center, possibly from a pressed mesh or stamp. Torn or cut-edged color fragments suggest layered history
Overall feel
The painting plays calm against chaos: a quiet, muted field disrupted by bursts of color and a dramatic black gesture. It feels energetic and spontaneous, with an almost archaeological layering, as if the cream surface were a wall partly peeled back to reveal the activity underneath.
