Into The Sky
Composition: Large, flat-brushed planes of cream, ivory, and pale celadon fill most of the panel. They overlap like torn paper, stacked clouds, or snow-covered ridgelines, with ragged white dry-brush edges where one layer meets the next. The strongest structural element is a long black diagonal line running from the upper right down to the center, which reads like a kite string, a mast stay, or a tightrope. It anchors the whole composition and pulls the eye down toward the center.
The focal cluster: Just left of center, a small patchwork of saturated color sits like a tiny village, a sailboat, or a bundle of cargo caught on the line. It contains deep plum, burgundy, hot magenta, orange, a neon coral-red square, and an olive-brown block, with bits of mint outlining. Below it, a purple-maroon wedge and a slate-blue fan of white hatch marks suggest a sail, a wing, or a hull. Short black tick marks and a little coil mark step across the cream field to the left, like fence posts or stitches.
Edges and periphery: The border is where the painting gets loud. The top is crowded with taupe and gray cloud-like blobs, deep indigo and violet patches, red and maroon corners, and splashes of turquoise, mint, and sunny yellow-orange in the upper right. At the right edge, magenta, purple, and tan stripes slash in at an angle, and aqua and cobalt patches peek in at the lower left. The effect is of a calm, pale center framed by a jostling, brightly colored world.
Line and texture: A loose black crayon-like loop at the right, almost a teardrop or balloon outline, echoes the scribbled gesture in “Seas Will Rise.” There is a faint white spiral near the top and a small circular squiggle at the lower right. The surface is thick and scraped, with palette-knife drags, visible impasto, and chalky white highlights. The signature reads at the lower right.
Mood and interpretation: The title and the diagonal line suggest ascent, with something tethered and about to lift off, whether a kite, a balloon, or a boat rising into open air. The pale field feels like sky or clouds, and the colorful cluster is a small, busy human-scale presence within it. The mood is airy, playful, and a little whimsical, with the black line adding tension against all that softness.
